Compost

Field Station is one of the few operations in the Richmond and Central Virginia area which is currently producing small-farm-made composts and compost blends. We are proud to be on the forefront of the composting movement, and are also happy to share the fact that our product is regularly purchased by numerous professional vegetable growers and community gardens in Richmond and surrounding areas. Some of our notable compost and soil amendments customers include Shalom Farms, Liberty Tree Farm, Camp Hanover, Acorn Farms, and many other residents, farmer’s market vendors, and hobby gardeners.

If your garden is not producing like it used to, or you simply want to get away from petroleum-based or chemical fertilizers, compost may be right for you. Organic matter, often labeled (OM) on a soil report, is a critical part of your soil makeup and determines, in large part, the success of your garden. Through practices like cover-cropping and compost installation, vegetable gardeners on both the small and large scale have been able to stabilize and invigorate their soils, while also generating higher yields. Compost adds OM to the soil, and also provides the bacteria and nutrient content essential to healthy soil conditions and high-yielding crops.
